Emergence is often considered as one of the key features that characterize complex systems. In this talk, I will address some relevant concepts on emergence and their relationship with modeling and simulation. I will also introduce a novel formal approach to integrate emergent behavior as a first category citizen within the modeling and simulation process, building on the DEVS formalism. Finally, I will show some use cases of our approach applied to domains such as flocking, epidemics, and intracellular dynamics, showcasing the benefits and limitations of the formalism.
